DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte

Happy first day of fall folks!

You know what that means fall colors, cooler temps, and the pumpkin flavor craze. Seriously everywhere you look is advertising pumpkin this pumpkin that. Not that I’m complaining as I like pumpkin I just don’t want to stand in line and pay mucho deniro for a drink I can easily make at home. Which brings me to the subject of this post Do It Yourself Pumpkin Spice Latte. Its warm, its spicy and with a hint of pumpkin oh so satisfying.

Now I have a fancy wancy Nespresso machine in both my kitchen and my office. I know we’re a little coffee crazy over here but these machines are so pretty and easy to use we just couldn’t help ourselves. Well that and when Jason and I went to William Sonoma’s on that fine Black Friday afternoon they had a sale and well the Bird’s have a hard time passing up on a sale on good products. But anyways back to making this DIY pumpkin spice latte. For me it was completely easy to accomplish this tasty delight. First I made the pumpkin spice syrup which was a breeze and it has been chillin' in my fridge ever since. When I am in the mood for a latte (which is every morning, afternoon and sometimes after dinner. Did I mention I like coffee?... decaf of course with the baby) I put a capsule in the Nespresso, place my mug in the appropriate spot and hit the brew button. While that’s working I fill the milk frother with almond milk (you could totally use regular milk this is just how I roll) and hit the power button. When the expresso finishes pouring I mix in 2 tbsp of the syrup, top it with the frothy milk stir a bit and top the whole darn thing with whip cream and a touch of cinnamon sprinkle. Wah lah! A fancy coffee house drink without the drive.

Now if you don’t have a fancy wancy Nespresso machine such as myself no problem! Just heat your milk by gently bringing it to a simmer over medium high heat. If you don’t have expresso you could also use regular coffee as well. Either way I promise you will be happy with the results and reaping the rewards of making your own pumpkin spice lattes for weeks to come. You know at least until we switch into the peppermint mocha craze… It’s coming people but no worries I can let you know how to make those at home too! But for now just enjoy your pumpkin spice lattes and breath in the fresh fall air.

The Process

Step 1

Combine all ingredients in a small sauce and simmer for about 10 minutes stirring occasionally. You want to make sure that all of the sugar has dissolved and everything has had a chance to mix and mingle. Strain the mixture using a sieve and chill until ready to use. This syrup will stay good for up to a month in the refrigerator but I have a feeling you'll use it up before then!

Step 2

Mix 2 Tbsp. of the syrup with expresso and warm milk. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle some cinnamon on top. Enjoy the fall colors while enjoying this tasty drink.
