Homemade Peanut Butter

It's Peanut Butter Time!

Now Peanut Butter could almost be its own category in this household. Jason will eat it with pretty much anything including carrots (which I just find weird) and Augie the pug comes running anytime he hears the jar opening. We eat Peanut Butter spread on sandwiches, with our snacks, in our smoothies, between our cookies, in a house with a mouse, in a box with a fox ok well you get the picture... We eat a lot peanut butter. So with that being said I had been buying the all-natural peanut butter by a certain person who has a skip in their step if you get my drift. Until one day, I was reading a magazine article that said a lot of the all natural peanut butters although are not using corn syrup are using palm oil. It went on to say that palm oil is now believed to be unhealthy for heart. Now I'm not necessarily one to jump on all the healthy vs non-healthy band wagons but I figured it probably wasn't a needed ingredient in my peanut butter.

Well I was right and our hearts are happier for that decision. After a trip to the store and realizing that organic peanut is a bit pricier then I wanted to spend I set off to see if I could make it at home. I am happy to report that homemade peanut butter is easy. In fact it's so easy it's silly. All you need is peanuts and a food processor type of appliance (I use a ninja). After a few rounds I have found that the key is letting it process enough. If you don't let it process enough you end up with peanut paste not butter. Still tasty but very hard to spread. I have also found that Augie now knows when I am making peanut butter and is glued to my side thru the whole process waiting not so patiently for the final result. You will know the texture of your homemade peanut butter is right when it starts getting shiny. When its ready throw it into a jar and keep in the refrigerator until your ready for consumption of said peanut butter.

Who knew?

The peanutty goodness spans the ages. The origins of peanut butter go all the way back to the Aztecs. Who knew? Well now you do. So go ahead and whip up some of this homemade peanut butter being thankful for the modern technology allowing you to create it in 5 minutes flat. I'm guessing it took the Aztecs a lot longer.

The Process

Step 1

Fill up your processor with peanuts. Turn on and process for about a a minute. Then opener up and check on the status of your peanutty goodness. You may want to loosen it up a bit by scraping down the sides with a spatula at this point. Turn the processor back on and process until your desired smoothness (2-5 mins). Pour into a jar and and place in refrigerator for safe keeping. Lick spoon before placing in dishwasher. Share some with dog if you have one. Resist opening the fridge again and eating it directly out of the jar.
